91Went from Adelaide to Sydney at 6 years with family after starting
infant schooling at Woodville. Continued school at Mosman Infant School
then Mosman Primary School, followed by Neutral Bay Intermediate High
School and The Scots College. Granted and "Exhibition" to Uni. of Sydney,
graduated end 1941 with second-class honours as Bachelor of
Engineering in Mining and Metallurgy. Army service (Royal Australian
Engineers) Apr 1942- Jan 1946, lieutenant from Dec 1942: Papua New
Guinea (Buldog - Wau road, Lae, and wharf at Madang) and Balikpapan
(wharves etc).
Broken Hill South Ltd's South Mine from Mar 1946 to Sep 1970, last nine
years as Manager.
Then Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd ("CRA") as a General Manager,
covering, at various times, general mining (Rum Jungle uranium in NT,
Mary Kathleen uranium in Q [director and GM], Redross nickel in WA, coal
investigation in Q, forestry investigation in Irian Jaya), property
administration in Melbourne, co-ordinating CRA Goup health and safety
and environment. Took early retirement at 60, 23 Jul 1981.
Director of Industrial Engineering Ltd for 2-3 years and Chaiman of
Directors of two small unlisted mining companies - Mineral Ventures and
Resources NL and Heathcote Gold NL - both failed (recession).
Councillor the AusIMM 1967-70 and Vice-President. Chairman of
Membership Committee for 10 years.
Founding "Secretary" (the only executive officer) of the Australian
Minerals and Energy Environment Foundation, 1991-1996.
In retirement, makes violins, violas and cellos, and plays viola in the
Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra about which he wrote a small book,
"Your friend, Alberto Zelman".
