Born in Cornwall England Jan 25 1853
Started work in Draper’s Shop as a general rouseabout at 11 years of age.
Came to Australia with his parents at 12 years. Went to Kapunda, then an important mining centre, and started as a Blacksmith’s striker on his thirteenth birthday.
Worked at that trade for seven years. Gained some experience in the engineering trade from his father. Passed his examination for marine engineer and went to England in that capacity in 1874. He was in charge of the condensing plant and winches on board the immigration ship “Hesperus” which left Port Adelaide 27 Oct 1874 arriving in London 30 Jan 1875 aged 22 years. Left the cold country for America and worked on Baltimore and Ohio railway as fireman. Left Chicago with 50 dollars and jumped the train to Baltimore 1000 miles. Worked his passage to Liverpool in grain steamer, travelled to London and was stranded. Eventually signed articles in a sailing ship bound to Australia via Calcutta and deserted in Melbourne.
